David Wiley Travel Grant

As a recognition of his outstanding commitment and service the Michigan State University Africanist graduate student community, the committee of the Michigan State University Annual Africanist Graduate Student Conference is pleased to announce the creation of travel award in honor of David Wiley. Each year the conference committee will award the David Wiley Travel Grant to assist a student studying at an African university to attend and present at the conference.

Members of the committee and larger Africanist graduate student community have benefited extensively from Dr. Wiley's guidance, advice, and support. Dr. Wiley is a Professor in the MSU Department of Sociology and former Director of the MSU African Studies Center. The award is created to both honor and extend Dr. Wiley's example of furthering the work of our fellow researchers on the continent.

The recipient of the 2009 David Wiley Travel Grant is Disang Monkge, a Masters Degree student in History at the University of Botswana. He will be presenting his paper entitled, "A History of the American Peace Corps Volunteerism and Its Social Impact on the Lives of the Batswana, 1966-1997."
