Summer African Language Program

Noncredit Summer 2021 African Language Program

Whether you are an MSU faculty conducting research in or about Africa, a student planning to apply for a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship, or you are just interested in African languages, the African Studies Center at MSU invites you to a noncredit summer African language program. For this first edition, we will offer Swahili and Zulu and could add more languages depending on demand.

Interested candidates can choose between an intensive summer courses and a non-intensive one. Both courses will be offered during Summer Session Two (July 6-August 19).

  1. The intensive course is approximatively the equivalent of two semesters of language study. It is ideal for students planning to apply for FLAS (to be eligible for FLAS, a student should have completed at least the equivalent of an academic year language course) and for highly motivated learners. The course will be 5 hours a day and run from Monday through Friday although class time will be shorter on some Fridays. (140 hours overall).
  2. The non-intensive course will run 2 hours a day, 4 days a week for 6 weeks depending on students’ needs.
