I have started to gain a better understanding of people who don't speak my language. On that note, being surrounded by people who speak other languages has helped me to learn bits of Italian. I could also say that a common misconception that people have is that nobody in other countries can speak anything other than their native language. From my experience, I have found that most people in the larger cities spoke some English, and younger people were actually very fluent in English.
I was also very surprised to find out that Greece did in fact not have fish tacos. This was something that I was looking forward to, only to find out that it is not the traditional dish that I thought it was.
I feel that any education abroad experience is worth it and should be pursued by students. This program specifically was very valuable to me because the countries of Italy and Greece both have vast differences in terrain and culture that varies heavily depending on the city that you are in. I feel that my background was a very important part of how my experience affected me.
Coming from a low-income background set me back compared to my peers in our travel experience. I had never left the country, and only flown on a plane once before leaving for this program.
It has shown me as well as other members from my small town that there are opportunities out there if you choose to pursue them.
I would again like to thank the donors for the scholarships that I have received to support me in my Education Abroad experience.
