On a personal level, living alone in a new country helped me to become more independent and further establish my identity. Every day was an adventure bringing with it a new experience that shaped me as an individual.

I met a variety of diverse, kind, and encouraging people during my time abroad. I was shocked by the differences in cultures, but even more so in how similar Americans and Belizeans were. I shared similar hobbies, goals, and values with many locals and the participating Belizean students that led to me making Student at excavation site digging in groundlifelong friends.

Initially I had doubts about adjusting, as a young adult new to traveling, but after about a week life in Belize felt like second nature. I had the independence of choosing how to spend my days- exploring while also having a support system of MSU students behind me to guide me along. During my time abroad I never felt alone or unwelcome, a myth I’m sure many students are wary about when considering such an opportunity. Locals welcomed newcomers into their culture and exposed me to traditions and ways of life that I had never heard of.

I believe coming back to the U.S. may have been the most shocking experience. While it may sound trite, I felt like a different person entering my home country than when I had left. The fact that I had faced adversities in an unknown environment, relying upon myself to navigate them, gives me a newfound confidence. I no longer feel unsure or hesitant in my abilities and I embrace the unknown going forward.
