The highlight of my program was undoubtedly the opportunity to witness some of the most innovative and thought-provoking theatre productions. Seeing plays such as Richard III, Witness for the Prosecution, and The Play That Goes Wrong not only expanded my understanding of theatre but also showed me the diverse ways in which stories can be told on stage. Richard III was a masterclass in blending historical narratives with current issues, and the production's realistic severed head prop was a testament to the power of visual storytelling. Witness for the Prosecution captivated me with its courtroom staging, culminating in the unforgettable final moments of the show.
Meanwhile, The Play That Goes Wrong showcased the importance of set design, safety, and the sheer joy of physical comedy, especially with its collapsing second story study. In addition to the performances, I had an incredible opportunity to tour the National Theatre. The behind-the-scenes look at the props, scenes, and paint workrooms was awe-inspiring. I left the tour feeling inspired to pursue a career as a props artisan, realizing that this field combines my love for craftsmanship with my passion for storytelling. The tour opened my eyes to the collaborative nature of theatre, where every prop, scene, and costume plays a crucial role in bringing a story to life.
The academic aspect of my program was equally rewarding. I attended a Complicite workshop with Bronya Deutsch, which was an experience I will never forget. I found the workshop immensely enjoyable. It was fascinating to see how Complicite develops their shows and to have the chance to create theatre from scratch. This workshop reinforced my belief that understanding an actor's process is invaluable for a designer, particularly when it comes to movement and costume design.
One of the most surprising aspects of my program was how much I enjoyed modern theatre. I attended a performance of Mnemonic, which, although I found it a bit slow, provided me with a new appreciation for the use of media in theatre. On the other hand, Bluets captivated me with its innovative storytelling and use of multimedia, further fueling my excitement for the possibilities of contemporary theatre.
Overall, my study abroad program to London was a deeply enriching experience that has not only expanded my knowledge of theatre but also inspired me to pursue new career paths within the industry. The combination of world-class performances, hands-on workshops, and behind-the-scenes tours made this program an unforgettable journey of discovery. London’s theatre scene is truly unparalleled, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it, even for a short time.
