Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are awarded to students enrolled in a program that combines the study of a modern foreign language with advanced training in international development studies or in the international development aspects of professional or other fields of study.

Fellowships for graduate and undergraduate studies in African languages and area studies are available through the African Studies Center, provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. They are designed for students who plan to utilize a modern foreign language in their future careers, which could include teaching in secondary or higher education in the U.S., serving the U.S. government, working for an international organization, or working for a private organization which contributes to international understanding.

FLAS Fellowships award Academic year undergraduates with $10,000 toward tuition and fees and a stipend of $5,000; Academic year graduates with $18,000 toward tuition and fees and $20,000 in stipends. Summer FLAS recipients receive $5,000 in tuition and a $2,500 stipend. 

Who May Apply

FLAS Fellows must be full time students in an undergraduate or graduate studies program and propose a course of study that includes both language training and related area course work each fall and spring semester.

African Studies Center FLAS fellowships are made possible by a grant under Title VI of the Higher Education Act from the U.S. Department of Education.
